Steel Express is one of the most unique and dynamic groups on the Chicago musical scene. Their distinctive blend of Caribbean steel pans with an American beat has delighted audiences throughout the Midwest.
Steel Express performs a wide variety of music from the Caribbean and was founded by percussionist Mark Smith in 1982. Mark has visited Trinidad to study steel pans and the musical styles of Calypso and Soca. His expertise ensures the authenticity of the Trinidad tradition, as well as the highest degree of contemporary musical quality.
The band features Mark on Double Tenor pans and Janet Smith on keyboards, along with a drummer and occasionally a Latin percussionist. The band has performed on boats, at country clubs, parks and nightclubs throughout the Midwest, presenting a wide variety of entertainment for festivals, schools, weddings, and parties of all kinds. They have been featured at Taste of Chicago, Navy Pier, with Jimmy Buffet at Popular Creek and Tinley Park, with Johnny B. and his radio showgram, and in the 1998 Bruce Willis movie Mercury Rising.
From Navy Pier to Rockford, Milwaukee to Michigan, bring the warm and inviting sounds of the Caribbean to your next event with Steel Express.
